Art & Fear
by David Bayles & Ted Orland
Hardcover, 122pp
Barnes & Noble – $10.38
Brief Synopsis –”Art & Fear explores the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. The book's co-authors, David Bayles and Ted Orland, are themselves both working artists, grappling daily with the problems of making art in the real world. Their insights and observations, drawn from personal experience, provide an incisive view into the world of art as it is experienced by art makers themselves. ”

Handmade Cards by Head Start Kids

This Friday at the “In Your Dreams” Show, we will be selling handcrafted cards made by children at the Head Start McGriff Street Center. Proceeds from the sale of these cards will help fund the Head Start Arts Program that focuses on music, dance, reading, and art education. These children are between the ages of 3½ -5 years old and qualify to receive aid because of their family’s financial situation. Head Start is committed to the empowerment of children with diverse backgrounds, families and staff through the support of our community for personal growth and development that will lead to a successful future.
These one-of-a-kind cards will be for sale on November 18th from 6pm-8pm at the Art Lair for only $2 each! They all have beautifully painted artwork by children at Head Start on the front and are blank on the inside. So they are great for any occasion! There are only a limited number of them for sale and each one is unique. Come out to buy these amazing cards and help support the education of these young artists.

OBJECT-ion Opening Reception Friday August 12

August 12th - September 18th, 2011

Reception:
Friday, August 12th, 6-9pm

Nationally exhibited artist and Florida panhandle native, Justin Lyons is a self-taught painter known for his mixed-media work. Lyons’ newest body of work, “OBJECT-ion” is a playful commentary on America’s consumer culture.

Using wit, humor and social stereotypes to convey messages, Lyons’ work reflects his personal thoughts and feelings about objects and their use. He contrasts images or text to draw out their multiple meanings. At first glance one may be intrigued in by a familiar childhood image like that of a popsicle or a bunny rabbit. Take a second or third look, and that same piece reveals a dark reality often ignored or simply not seen.

In his own words Lyons says, “I like to draw the viewer in with a childish feel or candy coated look to the work, and once they begin to bite, chew and digest it they see that maybe there's some meat to it as well.”

Lyons’ works in many mediums including wood (sometimes found), acrylic, house paint, spray paint, oil stick, epoxy resin and pencil. His compositions consist of multi-layered paint drippings, pencil scrawling and surface etchings.
