Sunday Alcohol Sales
Fort Walton Beach allows Sunday morning liquor sales

Daily News
FORT WALTON BEACH — Stores and restaurants in the city now will be able to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. seven days a week.
The City Council gave final approval Tuesday to an amended alcohol sales ordinance. Previously, most businesses could not sell alcohol before 1 p.m. Sundays.
The council voted 5-1 to pass the amendment. Councilman Bill Garvie abstained from voting because his family owns Staff’s Restaurant downtown.
Councilman Virgil Miller, who was not at the previous meeting when the council gave its preliminary OK, cast the lone dissenting vote.
With the amendment, Sunday hours now match weekday sales hours.
One resident opposed the change out of fear that vagrants would roam the streets with open containers.
“You’re gonna create a problem you won’t be able to do anything about,” Chris Gibson said. “We’re not a bunch of drunks around here.”
Councilman Dennis Reeves said the amendment is not meant to encourage or discourage drinking, but to allow businesses to compete with neighboring cities like Shalimar that do not have similar restrictions.
Miller echoed Gibson’s sentiments. He said he was disappointed in the 5-0 decision at the amendment’s first reading.
He said amending the law to be competitive was a repeat of the “stupid” decision to change the cutoff time from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. to compete with businesses in unincorporated Okaloosa County.
“We have become, as Ms. Gibson brought up, we’re enablers,” Miller said. “Tonight, I will not be an enabler. I’ll vote against it.”
Several business owners offered their opinion at the meeting.
Rick Cleveland, co-owner of Coasters, said after the meeting that it was not the drunks that stood in Shalimar convenience stores and purchased alcohol.
“It’s the guy on his way home from his shift on base planning ahead,” he said.
Fokker’s Restaurant owner Bill Avery added that the early morning alcohol sales were boat owners who regularly drove out of the city limits to stock up for a day on the water.
Although the new amendment will have no effect on his operation, Avery supported the council’s decision.
“There are a lot of independent business people and this is going to help them considerably,” he said. “We’re in hard times and we all need to be competitive.”

A Word from Sharon Allen -
Even though Pilates has recently made it's way on the American exercise scene like a new pop star, the teachings of Joseph Pilates have actually been around for decades. Coming from a ballet background I know that dancers have gravitated towards Pilates for years in injury recovery, strength, core and balance training. Pilates studios are increasing in our country daily. I believe that this frenzy can lead individuals to lose the true value of what this training really means to the mind and body. Perfecting the Pilates technique takes time, patience and mental discipline. It is important to me that the full concept of body alignment and strength be achieved slowly and accurately as opposed to quickly and misguidedly. Exercising should not result in pain and injury to our bodies. Pilates exercise can help you to feel stronger and better about yourself physically and mentally. Anyone dedicating themselves to learning Pilates can benefit if given the right guidance and nurturing.
Pilates Floor Mat
This class uses classic pilates floor exercises combined with beneficial stretches. Classes are tailored to the individual. Finish your workout feeling strong and empowered. All levels welcome. Extra mats are provided, but it is reccommended that students bring their own mats.
Pilates Mat with Props
Imagine a soft, subtle warm-up followed by rigorous classic pilates exercises including foam rollers, exercise balls and thera-bands. Students will be guided through gentle dancer-like imagery for stretching and relaxation. Leave the room feeling rejuvinated for your day. All levels welcome. Extra mats and props provided, but is reccommended that students bring their own mats.
Spine Corrector
The Pilates Spine Corrector is a small piece of equipment employed for strengthening the core and stretching the spine and shoulders in a safe, stabilized, supported way. It adds variety and challenge to a Pilates mat routine whether one is a novice or expert. It is important that students new to the spine corrector know how to work on this apparatus before joining a group setting. Two private sessions are required before joining a class.
Private Sessions
Discover the true beauty of Pilates core training. Private sessions using a combination of Pilates Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Spine Corrector. Clients will receive one-on-one training with Sharon Allen, certified Pilates instructor and Assistant Director of Northwest Florida Ballet. Give yourself the chance to experience personal training in a private, challenging, nuturing way. It's truly the secret to better health, flexibility, core strength and confidence.
Northwest Florida Ballet
This season's subscription price is only $50 for adults and $22.50 for children under 12.

Northwest Florida Ballet was founded in 1969 by dance pioneer Bernadette Clements Sims. The organization’s mission is to provide quality dance performances and instruction for Northwest Florida; identify and develop talented dancers; and increase appreciation of the arts through public education and outreach. The company has performedwith such well-established companies as the Atlanta Ballet, the Miami Ballet and the Washington Ballet. Founder Bernadette Clements facilitated the formation of the Florida Dance Association.
NFB has produced many outstanding professional dancers and teachers who perform throughout the US and Europe. In 1995, Todd Eric Allen, former NFB student and native of Northwest Florida, returned to the area to accept the position of Artistic Director of the company after a distinguished career as soloist with Louisville Ballet, Boston Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens.
In August 2002 NFB moved into its new home in downtown Fort Walton Beach, the Sybil Smith Lebherz Center for Dance Education. The 13,000 sq. ft. facility provides much needed studio space, as well as room for costume and scenery building and storage.
NFB Académie
NFB Académie is a comprehensive academic and artistic education program offered jointly by Northwest Florida Ballet and the Okaloosa County School District. The NFB Académie opened in August 2002 with an initial class of 30 third graders. Each year the students are selected by audition from the general population of children in the second grade. No prior dance training and no particular academic achievement is required. Auditions are open to all children in the second grade and selection is made solely on the child’s potential to learn to dance.

FWB looking into increasing hours for alcohol sales
October 13, 2009 7:44 PM
Kari C. Barlow
Daily News
FORT WALTON BEACH — Stores and restaurants in city limits are one step closer to being able to sell alcohol from 7 a.m. to 4 a.m. seven days a week.
The City Council gave preliminary approval Tuesday to an amended alcohol sales ordinance that lifts restrictions on the times alcohol can be sold.
Existing regulations prohibit most businesses from selling alcohol until 1 p.m. Sundays. Restaurants that serve full meals can begin serving alcohol at 10 a.m.
If the ordinance gets final approval at the next City Council meeting, stores and eateries can start selling alcohol at 7 a.m. Sundays.
The council voted 5-0 to move the amendment forward. Councilman Virgil Miller was not in attendance and Councilman Bill Garvie abstained from voting because his family owns Staff’s Restaurant in downtown Fort Walton Beach.
Councilman Dennis Reeves said the change will help city businesses compete with businesses outside the Fort Walton Beach.
The council began considering changes to the alcohol sales ordinance in April. Members agreed to loosen the hours at a special meeting Sept. 15.
“We appreciate the City Council doing this,” said Piper Gaffrey, owner of Stella Art in downtown Fort Walton Beach.
Gaffrey, who attended the council meeting, said the old law hurt businesses.
Randy Cleveland, who co-owns Coasters, said the new ordinance will help city businesses compete with counterparts in areas such as Shalimar and Okaloosa Island.
“The chain restaurants are able to open up and serve alcohol at 10 a.m. if they want to,” Cleveland said. “Now we can do the same. … It’s relaxing some things that needed relaxed.”
He said the new alcohol sales hours are an initial step to help downtown grow.
