Local artist Brad Greek will be exhibiting a retrospective collection of paintings in his solo show entitled "Eye Sore"
Brad Greek is an award-winning artist who has been exhibiting in the region for decades. He works in a variety of styles and mediums, and explores many different subjects. “Eye Sore” will be the first ever public exhibit to display Greek's early autobiographical work alongside his current stylized landscapes, giving a powerful insight into his psyche. This unique collection will include the artist early self -portraits, his Mystery in Art History series, and a few other inner vision pieces that were inspired by his past and life experiences.
Greek says of his style, “I am inclined to paint with a detailed style of realism, but will venture into a symbolic, surrealistic styles as well. Most artists are known for one certain style or subject matter. I understand the logic behind this common practice in the art world. But I feel that this stereotyping of an artist's creativity limits their potential abilities. I have found it impossible to stay with one style or medium. Bringing a variety of work to the table keeps minds wondering what I will create next.”
Brad Greeks work may be viewed in many locations around the Panhandle of Florida, as well as on his website at: http://www.bradgreek.com/. Brad currently resides in Florida with his wife and four children.
Summer 2010
Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf
Fort Walton Beach - The City’s Heritage Park and Cultural Center, along with the Friends of the Museums, Inc., present an original exhibit entitled “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” opening on Saturday, May 29, 2010. The exhibit is scheduled to be on display all summer inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum Lazarus Education Center. Two hundred years ago, the Gulf of Mexico was a dangerous and forboding body of water. No vessel was safe from the constant threat of attack from pirate ships who scourged across its high seas. “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” recounts the forgotten story of these last pirates of the Gulf of Mexico. It was the worst outbreak of piracy in the Gulf and Caribbean Basin since the age of the most notorious pirates such as Blackbeard and Black Bart.
The exhibit examines the real pirates who swept across the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century and wreaked havoc on American shipping along the Gulf coast from Texas to Florida. “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” is an educational and interactive exhibit that allows visitors to test their pirate knot tying skills, try on clothing real pirates from the period would have worn, raise a pirate flag on a crow’s nest, and feel what it was like to stand on a deck and steer the ship. Visitors will also see artifacts pirates used and plundered from merchant ships during the era.
This exhibit was made possible by the generous support and sponsorship of Friends of the Museums, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in July 1995, with the goal to foster and advance educational and scientific research to preserve, protect, and promote the rich cultural heritage of this area. The organization is dedicated to supporting the Indian Temple Mound and Museum, the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the Garnier Post Office. Additional sponsors for the exhibit include the Florida Department of State Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee.
Summer hours for Heritage Park is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE. The exhibit is included in regular admission to Heritage Park: $5 plus tax for adults, $4.50 plus tax for seniors 55 + and active military, and $3 plus tax for children 4 to 17. For further information please contact Museum Program Coordinator Mike Thomin at (850)833-9595.

Thursday, July 22 (10:30 – 11:30 am) – Gaia’s will be offering a Butterfly Gardening Workshop –we will discuss the difference between “host/larval” plants and “nectar” plants; what plants attract what butterflies (and hummingbirds too!); the lifecycle of the butterfly; and answer any questions you may have. Cost for the class is $7.00; please call the shop to register.
Saturday, July 24 (10:30 – 11:30 am) – Edible Landscaping: Many of us have smaller areas that we call our yards, having an edible landscape is the solution to that! You can mix flowers and vegetable plants together for the added benefit of pollinator insects being drawing in by the flowering plants and they’ll go ahead and pollinate your veggie plant flowers while they visit. Not to mention companion planting. Join us as we discuss edible landscaping. Please call the shop to register; cost for the class is $7.00.
Thursday, July 29 (10:30-11:30 am) – Organic Gardening Series: Beneficial Insects. We will talk about beneficial insects. How to attract them into your garden to take care of problems the natural way! We can special order beneficials for you - Ladybugs, praying mantis, beneficial nematodes, etc. We also have a number of birdhouses, birdfeeders, and bathouses at Gaia’s. Please call the shop to register, class fee $7.00.
Saturday, July 31 (10:30 – 11:30 am) – Organic Gardening Series: Natural Pesticides. We will talk about natural pesticides. You’d be amazed at some of the home-made concoctions you can make yourself at home. We will also talk about the natural pesticides that are sold in the market and how they are different from synthetic pesticides. All natural pesticides will be 10% off the day of the workshop. Please call to register; cost for class is $7.00

July Green Ideas*:
SPORTS & EXERCISE: A burgeoning fitness industry is encouraging us to improve the health of our bodies, but unfortunately much of what’s offered isn’t so great for the health of the planet. Rethink your exercise routine to trim some carbon pounds.
BUILD EXERCISE INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator, carry your recycling to the local depot, and walk, run, or cycle to work or play.
RENT OR BORROW SPORTS EQUIPMENT, unless you use it regularly, to avoid wasting valuable resources on stuff that’s only going to collect dust in the closet most of the time anyway.
RECYCLE YOUR RUNNING SHOES The rubber in their soles has a multitude of uses, including all-weather athletic fields. Check out the following website if interested: http://www.associatedcontent. com/article/191888/recycle_ your_old_tennis_shoes.html orhttp://planetgreen.discovery. com/fashion-beauty/recyling- your-used-running-sho.html
POOL CARE. If you’ve got a swimming pool, fill it with filtered rainwater, heat it using solar-thermal panels, keep it covered to reduce heat loss, and check it regularly for leaks.
JOIN A GREEN GYM. Instead of driving to an air-conditioned gym to work out on energy-hungry machines, why not get fit in more natural surroundings? Get in touch with a local environmental group, and volunteer for carbon-absorbing projects such as tree planting and developing nature areas at schools.
DID YOU KNOW?
- You can burn up to 30% more calories an hour creating nature trails than doing aerobics.
- Cross-country skiing has a lower impact than downhill skiing because it doesn’t require chairlifts or the razing of the mountain to make way for the ski runs.
- The average golf course uses 100 times more water than a four-bedroom home. Make sure your golf club irrigates sparingly and with reclaimed water.
- Covering a swimming pool with an insulating layer can reduce heat loss by as much as 30%.
- Ten gym treadmills use an average of 13,500kWh of electricity each month – enough to run your hair dryer nonstop for more than a year.

Sonic City 5000
Stand Up Paddle races have become stale. Everyone locally is doing the same-old 2 mile course race, BORING. Liquid Surf and Sail is proud to present The Sonic City 5000; a SUP race that drop-kicks everything else and takes racing to the next level in the panhandle. No one on the Emerald Coast has run a race of this magnitude with this much money at stake. No one in Florida is offering cash prizes, no one. The Sonic City 5000 will be a 15 mile SUP down-winder with a $5,000 cash purse!!! If you are not ready to paddle for the gold, don’t worry about it. Along with the Elite 12’6” Class, there will be recreation classes for Men, Women, Jr's, and teams. The race is set to take place on Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
