Walton Guard 150th Anniversary

April 8 - 10 at 

Fort Walton Landing in Fort Walton Beach

Go back in time with the FWB Chamber Chamber and the Walton Guards, Inc,  a local authentically minded living history and reenactor organization.  On the weekend of April 8 through 10, 2011, they will lead community celebrations of the 150^th Anniversary of the unit’s founding at Fort Walton Landing, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.  The event will feature a live Civil War militia camp, historical exhibits and presentations, as well as vendors and performances.  Friday afternoon (the 8^th) will be reserved as “School Day” for local children to learn more about the area’s Civil War history.

Friday afternoon (the 8^th) will be reserved as “School Day” for local children to learn more about the area’s Civil War history.  On Friday, historical reenactors will set up and operate a period 1861 military camp, sleeping over the weekend in tents, with campfires, military drills, soldiers on guard duty, and work details.  On Saturday, the men will be joined by families of the soldiers who will be reenacting the frequent family visits to Camp Walton. The ladies will also present an 1860’s fashion and household items show. 

Weekend Highlights

The weekend will hold several highlights, including a “skirmish” between the Confederate defenders of Camp Walton and invading Union scouts or reconnaissance forces at the Landing - the original site of Camp Walton in 1861.  The skirmish will take place on at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday.  It will demonstrate typical skirmish tactics and weapons used during the war between small opposing forces groups.

 Another unique feature of the weekend will be interactive presentations by re-enactors who portray Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Jefferson Davis.  They will hold a staged dialogue on Saturday and Sunday, and will wander and chat with visitors throughout the day, speaking in character with all attendees.

Olde Towne Brass

And yes – there will be music!  Civil War music, of course – performed by the Olde Towne Brass, a musical group that performs in the manner of Early American and Civil War bands, playing original Civil War Music on actual Civil War Over-The-Shoulder (OTS) Brass Horns.  Olde Towne Brass presents programs that provide their listeners with history and information about the composer and the song. Their renditions of these timeless and compelling tunes are played just as they were more than 150 years ago. 

            Living History Stations will be in continuous session throughout each day:  1) blacksmith; 2) basket weaving; 3) weavers and spinners; 4) soap making; 5) laundress; 6) small arms; 7) Confederate Signal Corps; 8) 1^st Fla. US Cavalry; 9) CS Postal Service; 10) Indian museum; and 11) Surgeon.

We play music representing all the dances we teach here, from Salsa to Tango.....from Swing to Waltz...and announce what your dance choices are as each is played....so it's still a teaching environment, but in a social setting...a stepping stone for some...a personal, private club for others.

The Making of Yin

In copying the “Yin” painting, you will learn layout design as well as several painting techniques to achieve textures and blending. Creativity and alternative perceptions of this painting are encouraged. At the end of the series, students will leave with their own version of “Yin”. No experience is preferred as this workshop is geared towards Beginners and will take you step-by-step through the process of creating your own Masterpiece!

All students must bring their own painting supplies and easel. Students have a choice to use either Acrylic or Oil paint. We will not be inter-mixing the two mediums within one painting, so please have all of your paints to be of the same type – Acrylic or Oil.

HPCC to host Hometown History Saturdays

The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center (HPCC) invite you to be a part of “Hometown History Saturdays.” On the first Saturday of each month the museums of HPCC especially welcome locals. Visitors who can show a driver’s license with a Fort Walton Beach address will receive admission at a reduced rate of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.

The museums of HPCC include the Indian Temple Mound Museum (open Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:30pm); the Camp Walton Schoolhouse and the Garnier Post Office Museums (open Saturdays from 1:00-3:00pm). This reduced admission is paid at the Indian Temple Mound Museum and will allow entrance to all three museums. The reduced rate will not apply to educational programs taking place on Saturdays.

In conjunction with this program, Friends of the Museums, Inc. will have a drawing to award an honorary Friends membership each month. Friends of the Museums provide financial and volunteer commitment in support of programming and operations at HPCC. Benefits of membership include advanced invitations to programs and activities, museum store discounts and reduced museum admission rates.

JENNIFER DIAZ

Photographer Jennifer Diaz presents her solo show “Passage” on February 12 - April 10, 2011.

“Passage” features a photo collection reflecting the artist’s view of the simple details in a complex world.

Jennifer Diaz’s exhibition focuses on the passage of time in relation to simple items often overlooked, due to life’s distractions. Her focus on minute details along with the method in which she chooses to frame her subject matter, gives her audience a micro and fragmented view. This leaves viewers wondering and imagining what makes up the rest of the scene. Jennifer’s work also shows us the beauty of change resulting from natural decomposition. Example pieces include: a water droplet falling from an aged faucet and an air conditioner slowly consumed by the progressive growth of petals and vines. The intrigue of Jennifer’s work lies in her perception of mundane and, some might say, unsightly objects. Jennifer says of her work, “I shine a light on natural beauty and detailed complexity that others may not be able to see.”

While Jennifer’s works are derived from her personal experiences of growing up in Miami, caring for her ailing grandfather, and most recently her travels as a member of the United States Air Force, they are also open to individual interpretation.

SHOTS FOR A GOOD CAUSE!

Less than a year after enlisting in the Air Force, Jennifer’s grandfather, Beni, passed away. Although challenged with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Beni always laughed and joked as if the debilitating effects of MS did not exist. Not a day goes by where Jennifer isn’t thinking of Beni and his spirit of strength and humor. She continues to remember him through her photography. Every shot taken is an opportunity to help others challenged with MS. In memory of Benigno Q. Diaz, the artist’s profits are donated to the National MS Society, North Florida Chapter.

The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center announces its “First Call” to all potters and ceramic artists who would like to participate in the third annual pottery exposition event titled Fire and Earth: 2011 Coastal Pottery Expo. The event is scheduled on Saturday, April 30th, 2011 from10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of Heritage Park and Cultural Center. Booth fees for artists are $40.00 per 10 ft. X 10 ft. space. Space is limited.

Artists interested in participating can stop by the Indian Temple Mound Museum or Full Circle Art Gallery in Fort Walton Beach and pick up an application, or call to have an application faxed or mailed to their email or postal address.

Fire and Earth will celebrate the ancient art form of ceramics and pottery by featuring all forms, genres, mediums, and styles created by potters and ceramic artistans throughout the Gulf Coast region.

Potters and ceramic artists will display, sell, educate and share their work with the public on the museum grounds throughout the day. Also, during this event students that submit their work to the Pottery Youth Art Competition will display their work and will be awarded placement throughout the day. Additionally, several demonstrations on pottery will take place throughout the day.

Join us for our annual Doggie Easter Egg Hunt and Party! Saturday, April 23rd from 1-3pm, The Landing Park (right behind the store) will be full of festive doggies searching for Easter eggs, playing games and having a blast at one of our most fun events of the year! Easter eggs will be filled with doggie treats and a few "Golden Eggs" will hold really fun surprises!

Adoptable dogs from several local rescue organizations will be in attendance, looking for their forever families. We will also have game stations such as paw print painting, musical sit and bobbing for hotdogs. Local photographer Allison Shamrell will be taking photos as well. Lots of fun activites planned for the day!

Egg Hunt starts promptly at 1pm!!! Please bring your own basket for collecting eggs and keep your leashes at a short 4-6ft range for the safety of all attending dogs & people.
