Fisher House: A home away from home for families of sick or wounded military personnel
When: 26 March 2011
Where: The Landing, Brooks Street, Fort Walton Beach, FL
Course: The course is flat and fast along the Sound. There will be water stations along the route. The one mile run is for the children, which makes the event a family affair.
Event: The run/walk will begin approximately 8:30 AM. All ages may participate. The kids one mile run will
begin approximately 9:30 AM. Local bands will provide entertainment at the start and finish.
Awards: Awards will be presented at the end of the race. Overall male/female, master male/ female and
grandmaster for the 5K run. Awards will be presented to the top three in the following age groups: 0-9, 10-
14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+.
Walking: Awards will be presented to the overall male/female, master male/female and the n
ext top ten finishers.
Mile Awards: Overall boy/girl and top three in the 0-6, 7-10, and 11-13 age groups.
Post Race: Awards will be presented at The Landing at the conclusion of the event.
Entry Fees: Early registration through 19 March 2011. Day of registration, 6:30-7:45 AM.

The Fort Walton Beach Library invites the public to enjoy the artwork of two local digital photo artists, Linda Carr and Bernadette Sims during February and March. The two longtime friends are both award winning photographers and are well-known for their involvement in civic, artistic and non-profit organizations in Northwest Florida. Their photography work covers a wide variety of subjects including landscape, flowers, people and architecture.

Photographer Jennifer Diaz presents her solo show “Passage” on February 12 - April 10, 2011.
“Passage” features a photo collection reflecting the artist’s view of the simple details in a complex world.
Jennifer Diaz’s exhibition focuses on the passage of time in relation to simple items often overlooked, due to life’s distractions. Her focus on minute details along with the method in which she chooses to frame her subject matter, gives her audience a micro and fragmented view. This leaves viewers wondering and imagining what makes up the rest of the scene. Jennifer’s work also shows us the beauty of change resulting from natural decomposition. Example pieces include: a water droplet falling from an aged faucet and an air conditioner slowly consumed by the progressive growth of petals and vines. The intrigue of Jennifer’s work lies in her perception of mundane and, some might say, unsightly objects. Jennifer says of her work, “I shine a light on natural beauty and detailed complexity that others may not be able to see.”
While Jennifer’s works are derived from her personal experiences of growing up in Miami, caring for her ailing grandfather, and most recently her travels as a member of the United States Air Force, they are also open to individual interpretation.

Less than a year after enlisting in the Air Force, Jennifer’s grandfather, Beni, passed away. Although challenged with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Beni always laughed and joked as if the debilitating effects of MS did not exist. Not a day goes by where Jennifer isn’t thinking of Beni and his spirit of strength and humor. She continues to remember him through her photography. Every shot taken is an opportunity to help others challenged with MS. In memory of Benigno Q. Diaz, the artist’s profits are donated to the National MS Society, North Florida Chapter.

HPCC to host Hometown History Saturdays
The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center (HPCC) invite you to be a part of “Hometown History Saturdays.” On the first Saturday of each month the museums of HPCC especially welcome locals. Visitors who can show a driver’s license with a Fort Walton Beach address will receive admission at a reduced rate of $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.
The museums of HPCC include the Indian Temple Mound Museum (open Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:30pm); the Camp Walton Schoolhouse and the Garnier Post Office Museums (open Saturdays from 1:00-3:00pm). This reduced admission is paid at the Indian Temple Mound Museum and will allow entrance to all three museums. The reduced rate will not apply to educational programs taking place on Saturdays.
In conjunction with this program, Friends of the Museums, Inc. will have a drawing to award an honorary Friends membership each month. Friends of the Museums provide financial and volunteer commitment in support of programming and operations at HPCC. Benefits of membership include advanced invitations to programs and activities, museum store discounts and reduced museum admission rates.

April 8 - 10 at Fort Walton Landing in Fort Walton Beach
Go back in time with the FWB Chamber Chamber and the Walton Guards, Inc, a local authentically minded living history and reenactor organization. On the weekend of April 8 through 10, 2011, they will lead community celebrations of the 150th Anniversary of the unit’s founding at Fort Walton Landing, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The event will feature a live Civil War militia camp, historical exhibits and presentations, as well as vendors and performances. Friday afternoon (the 8th) will be reserved as “School Day” for local children to learn more about the area’s Civil War history.

Friday afternoon (the 8th) will be reserved as “School Day” for local children to learn more about the area’s Civil War history. On Friday, historical reenactors will set up and operate a period 1861 military camp, sleeping over the weekend in tents, with campfires, military drills, soldiers on guard duty, and work details. On Saturday, the men will be joined by families of the soldiers who will be reenacting the frequent family visits to Camp Walton. The ladies will also present an 1860’s fashion and household items show.
Weekend Highlights
The weekend will hold several highlights, including a “skirmish” between the Confederate defenders of Camp Walton and invading Union scouts or reconnaissance forces at the Landing - the original site of Camp Walton in 1861. The skirmish will take place on at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday. It will demonstrate typical skirmish tactics and weapons used during the war between small opposing forces groups.

Another unique feature of the weekend will be interactive presentations by re-enactors who portray Generals Ulysses S. Grant and Jefferson Davis. They will hold a staged dialogue on Saturday and Sunday, and will wander and chat with visitors throughout the day, speaking in character with all attendees.

And yes – there will be music! Civil War music, of course – performed by the Olde Towne Brass, a musical group that performs in the manner of Early American and Civil War bands, playing original Civil War Music on actual Civil War Over-The-Shoulder (OTS) Brass Horns. Olde Towne Brass presents programs that provide their listeners with history and information about the composer and the song. Their renditions of these timeless and compelling tunes are played just as they were more than 150 years ago.
Living History Stations will be in continuous session throughout each day: 1) blacksmith; 2) basket weaving; 3) weavers and spinners; 4) soap making; 5) laundress; 6) small arms; 7) Confederate Signal Corps; 8) 1st Fla. US Cavalry; 9) CS Postal Service; 10) Indian museum; and 11) Surgeon.
