Lars Runar Exhibition
Fort Walton Beach - The Fort Walton Beach Public Library invites residents to enjoy an exhibit of artwork by Lars Runar on display in the library’s lobby the entire month of August. Runar's interest in photography began while he was stationed in Guam with the United States Air Force. He has won several prizes in nature photography at local competitions and also creates hand colored portraits.
Later in his military career while working in the public affairs field in Germany, he became a photojournalist focusing on military activities and human interest stories. His photos and articles were published in the Stars and Stripes newspaper, the Intercom, a command wide newspaper, as well as the Rhein-Main AB newspaper.
He has also had a cover photo on the Inspector General Brief publication.
Runar has been successful in winning prizes in both national and local photo exhibitions. Recently he won Best of Show for a photo of a Cleopatra Calla-Lilly, and first place for a black and white print of a lighthouse.
The library is located at 185 Miracle Strip Parkway, in downtown Fort Walton Beach at the corner of Eglin Parkway. Parking is on First Street to the North and Ferry Road to the East.

Save Our Shores Exhibition

People’s feelings over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill weren’t hard to articulate verbally, but how does one portray those feelings visually?
Full Circle Gallery owner Mercedes Rodgers is giving local artists an opportunity to explore the psyche of the Gulf oil spill in the Save Our Shores (or SOS) exhibition opening Aug. 14. The highly personal and emotionally charged exhibit runs through Aug. 28 at the Fort Walton Beach gallery. Submissions for the exhibit are being accepted up to the day of the exhibit.
Rodgers’ own feelings about the massive oil spill have been a roller coaster. She was out of town the day the offshore rig exploded and started spewing oil. Being so far away from home and out of the center of activity, she found herself feeling “detached.” “Then when I got home and things were so normal...I think I was in a state of shock,” she explains.
Everyone talked about their different feelings about the Gulf oil disaster, but the frustration level was clear, Rodgers says of the days after the spill. A friend suggested she use the community outreach on which the gallery is built to help people deal with all the feelings they were having.
“Pottery is cheaper than therapy,” quips Rodgers.
So she put together a dual-layered plan. One part is the show, a venue for the community, but she has also begun a personal project that will continue after the show to remind people of what she says is the fallacy of current energy policies.
The purpose of the show is to be educational and help support the local artists who have suffered as a result of the downturn in tourism, a byproduct of the oil spill. There will be a closing reception on Aug. 28 with a silent auction from 6 to 8 p.m.
“Artists can work through their emotions, and we can all have a dialogue, artists and patrons. We can have a forum for education about what options we really do have on a local level, but also on a national level to prevent this from happening again,’ says Rodgers.
The second layer of her SOS project will continue indefinitely after the show. The SOS Security Blanket is a conceptual quilt made of all petroleum-based products. It is symbolic in that it represents the naïve way “in which Americans have hidden from the inevitable by pulling a blanket over our head much in the way a child would pull a favorite blanket over his head. We don’t have very good energy policies—it leads to this kind of disaster,” Rodgers explains patiently.
“My goal is to have people from all over the country to send me squares they have drawn, painted on, and then put it all together and have it be a visual petition for better energy policies and use it as a teaching tool for a more sustainable future.”
Rodgers envisions the SOS Security Blanket being crocheted, knitted or done by domestic craft construction using grocery store bags or construction plastic. She has high expectations for the project and hopes it gains momentum as did the Nike blanket that was started to protest child labor and the AIDS quilt created to bring awareness to that disease.
Specifications for the blanket squares are on the gallery’s Web site, www.fullcirclefwb.com, as well as ideas for materials and construction. Artist submission forms are also available there and must accompany all artwork.
The gallery is located at 29B SE Eglin Parkway and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to gallery showings, open studio hours and private lessons are offered for pottery. Party or group accommodations are also offered.
There is also a “Sip and Spin” the first and third Saturday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. BYOB of favorite wine and try your hand at pottery. Advance registration is encouraged.
“We truly are a community-based studio,” says Rodgers. Hence the motto, “Where Creativity and Community Meet!”

Fort Walton Beach - The City’s Heritage Park and Cultural Center, along with the Friends of the Museums, Inc., present an original exhibit entitled “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” opening on Saturday, May 29, 2010. The exhibit is scheduled to be on display all summer inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum Lazarus Education Center.
Two hundred years ago, the Gulf of Mexico was a dangerous and forboding body of water. No vessel was safe from the constant threat of attack from pirate ships who scourged across its high seas. “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” recounts the forgotten story of these last pirates of the Gulf of Mexico. It was the worst outbreak of piracy in the Gulf and Caribbean Basin since the age of the most notorious pirates such as Blackbeard and Black Bart.
The exhibit examines the real pirates who swept across the Gulf of Mexico in the early 19th century and wreaked havoc on American shipping along the Gulf coast from Texas to Florida. “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” is an educational and interactive exhibit that allows visitors to test their pirate knot tying skills, try on clothing real pirates from the period would have worn, raise a pirate flag on a crow’s nest, and feel what it was like to stand on a deck and steer the ship. Visitors will also see artifacts pirates used and plundered from merchant ships during the era.
This exhibit was made possible by the generous support and sponsorship of Friends of the Museums, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in July 1995, with the goal to foster and advance educational and scientific research to preserve, protect, and promote the rich cultural heritage of this area. The organization is dedicated to supporting the Indian Temple Mound and Museum, the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the Garnier Post Office. Additional sponsors for the exhibit include the Florida Department of State Bureau of Archaeological Research and the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee.

and William Augustus Bowles Foundation, Inc., present a new temporary exhibit on the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival to be on display this summer inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum main gallery to supplement the museums’ premiere exhibit of the summer “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf.”
The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival began as a water skiing event in Fort Walton Beach in 1953. By 1955 the festival expanded to include a pirate theme, fish fry, and torchlight parade. Over the past 55 years, the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival has become a defining characterstic and premiere event in the city of Fort Walton Beach. The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival exhibit features costumes, memorablia, photographs and documents that highlight the festival’s five decades of existence. The temporary exhibit is included in the cost of normal museum admission, which includes the Indian Temple Mound Museum, Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum, and Garnier Post Office Museum.
The William Augustus Bowles Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 2007 in order to preserve the history of the festival. They collect memorabilia from the pirate festival with the ultimate goal to eventually open a museum dedicated to the history of the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival.
Summer hours for Heritage Park, located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The exhibit is included in the regular admission price of $5 plus tax for adults, $4.50 plus tax for seniors 55 + and active military, and $3 plus tax for children 4 to 17. Stand Up Paddle races have become stale. Everyone locally is doing the same-old 2 mile course race, BORING. Liquid Surf and Sail is proud to present The Sonic City 5000; a SUP race that drop-kicks everything else and takes racing to the next level in the panhandle. No one on the Emerald Coast has run a race of this magnitude with this much money at stake. No one in Florida is offering cash prizes, no one. The Sonic City 5000 will be a 15 mile SUP down-winder with a $5,000 cash purse!!! If you are not ready to paddle for the gold, don’t worry about it. Along with the Elite 12’6” Class, there will be recreation classes for Men, Women, Jr's, and teams. The race is set to take place on Saturday, August 28, 2010 in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

“Sunfeather Series Workshop”
The Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center is offering a new “Sunfeather Series Workshop” a sequence of Native American arts and crafts classes, from September until December, to be held on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. Each class will last between three to four hours, and all supplies will be included. There is a five person minimum required for each class, with a maximum of ten participants. Advance registration and payment of cash or check is required. Participants can attend any class they wish and are not required to register for entire series. The workshop will include:
September 18- Dreamcatchers - $45.00 + $5.00 facilities use fee
October 2 - Leatherworks (4 X 6 leather bag) - $40.00 + $5.00 facilities use fee
October 16- Fingerweaving (belt/sash) - $45.00 + $5.00 facilities use fee
November 13- Pine needle basket - $30.00 + $5.00 facilities use fee
December 11- Drum making - $80.00 + $5.00 facilities use fee
The “Sunfeather Series Workshop” will be taught by Sandra “Sunfeather” Lee of the Perdido Bay Tribe, a local and state recognized tribe of Creek Indians. Sandra is an artisan, demonstrator, and teacher of Creek Indian heritage, material culture, and arts. She is widely respected for her craftsmanship and knowledge of beadwork, leatherwork,pine needle basketry, and gourd art. Lee has delivered presentations to colleges and
universities, and has participated in several Native American gatherings in the area. Lee teaches in the traditional way of her Native American ancestors.
