Women Sailors: Pirates, Soldiers and Saviors at HPCC



Fort Walton Beach - The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center is
hosting a free lecture on Friday, August 13th, at 12:00 p.m./noon inside the Indian Temple
Mound Museum. Dr. Amy Mitchell-Cook, a professor of history at the University of
West Florida, will deliver a presentation titled “Women Sailors: Pirates, Soldiers and
Saviors.”


Dr. Mitchell-Cook received a PhD from Penn State University and a master’s degree
from East Carolina University in history with a specialization in maritime history. Her
current research interest includes early American shipwreck narratives. Dr. Mitchell-
Cook has published several articles on maritime history and her forthcoming book, When
God, the Devil, and a Friendly Cannibal Met at Sea: A Study of Early American
Shipwrecks, is due out in 2010-2011.
