Archaeology Kids Summer Camp at Heritage Park

Fort Walton Beach - Get ready for fun! “Archaeology Kids: Museum Summer Camp” is on its way to the Heritage Park and Cultural Center this summer. The camp will be offered June 14th through 16th and June 21st through 23rd from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Campers will experience 12,000 years of history in three funfilled days, as they learn about early Native Americans and the archaeology used to uncover their way of life as they explore a mock on-site archaeological excavation, analyze their findings and create a museum display of their own.

Attendees will also enjoy the museum’s new summer exhibit “Pirates: The Last Scourge of the Gulf” created by museum staff and the Friends of the Museums, Inc. Each day children will learn about the past, about archaeology, museums, artifacts and make a take home project. There will be camp supplies, a snack to
enjoy and art/science activities to participate in.

Day 1: Digging into the Past – Campers will experience a mock excavation and learn about Archaeology in the Indian Temple Mound Museum and Camp Walton Schoolhouse.
Day 2: Partners with the Past – Campers will learn about local Native American and area history as they analyze their artifacts. They will visit the summer exhibit.
Day 3: Bringing the Past to Life – Campers will use what they have learned to create a museum exhibit and will try their hand at experimental archaeology activities.

The cost of the camp will be $50.00 per child for all three days. Students going into the third through sixth grades are welcome. Advance registration is required. Please call Gail Lynn Meyer at 833-9595, to sign up.
The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center is a community outreach division of the City and is committed to providing area historical educational programming. It is home to the Indian Temple Mound Museum, the Fort Walton Temple Mound, the Camp Walton Schoolhouse Museum and the
Garnier Post Office Museum.
