Civil War Speaker Series:

“Asboth’s 1864 Northwest Florida Raid”
The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park & Cultural Center will host a free public speaker series in honor of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. The Civil War was the deadliest conflict the United States has ever waged in terms of American lives lost. It remains one of the most important historical events in the history of the United States and changed the country forever.

The next upcoming lecture will feature Dale Cox on March 4th, 2011 at 1:00 PM. Mr. Cox’s talk is titled “Asboth’s 1864 Northwest Florida Raid” and will be held inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum.

Dale Cox is a writer and historian. He has written numerous historical books about local history and Civil War battles. Some of his books include “The Battle of Natural Bridge, Florida,” “The Battle of Marianna, Florida,” and “The Battle of Massard Prairie.”

This speaker series was made possible through the partnership of Heritage Park and Cultural Center, Florida Public Archaeology Network, National Park Service, Friends of the Museums, INC. and the University of West Florida.

Mosaic Bird Bath Work Shop March 5th

mosaic complete

Can you hear the birds singing as you go out into your yards? With spring in the air, what better time to make a great mosaic bird bath. This workshop is going to be loads of fun! All you have to do is show up , and the NWFLAA will provide everything, including lunch. Do plan on spending most of the day at the Art Lair, we will do the mosaic in the morning and as it dries we will have lunch and then return to grout the piece. I do need to know how many people are interested in taking the workshop, in order to have enough materials for everyone. The bird bath makes a great focal point for any landscape. Hope to see you Saturday, March 5th. Click here to register.

The Fort Walton Beach Eat Local Group
is meeting at the Art Lair on
Tuesday, March 8 · 5:30pm - 9:00pm.
This event is hosted by Artesano Jewels and
If you are concerned about where your food comes from and how it is grown then come and join the group.  The potluck dinner is at 5:30 pm and the movie is at 6:30.  Come for one or both, whatever is best for you.  If joining the potluck, our goal is to eat local so bear that in mind when choosing what to bring.  Below is a synopsis of the movie we will be viewing.
161976_132778306792042_5687466_n
This enormously powerful film, The World According to Monsanto chronicles Monsanto’s controversial past: A history that combines some of the most toxic products ever sold with misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. They now race to genetically engineer (and patent) the world’s food supply, a frightening strategy which profoundly threatens our health, environment, and economy. Exposing secret documents with first-hand accounts by victims, scientists, and politicians, this widely praised film exposes why Monsanto has become the world’s poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology. How have our leaders come to see support for such jury-rigged systems – systems that mask and disperse responsibility, while simultaneously spreading and intensifying risk – as somehow in the national interest?…

Passage | February 12th - April 10th, 2011

JENNIFER DIAZ

Promo flyer for the Passage exhibit by Jennifer Diaz at Full Circle Gallery in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
Photographer Jennifer Diaz presents her solo show “Passage” on February 12 - April 10, 2011.
“Passage” features a photo collection reflecting the artist’s view of the simple details in a complex world.
Jennifer Diaz’s exhibition focuses on the passage of time in relation to simple items often overlooked, due to life’s distractions. Her focus on minute details along with the method in which she chooses to frame her subject matter, gives her audience a micro and fragmented view. This leaves viewers wondering and imagining what makes up the rest of the scene. Jennifer’s work also shows us the beauty of change resulting from natural decomposition. Example pieces include: a water droplet falling from an aged faucet and an air conditioner slowly consumed by the progressive growth of petals and vines. The intrigue of Jennifer’s work lies in her perception of mundane and, some might say, unsightly objects. Jennifer says of her work, “I shine a light on natural beauty and detailed complexity that others may not be able to see.”
While Jennifer’s works are derived from her personal experiences of growing up in Miami, caring for her ailing grandfather, and most recently her travels as a member of the United States Air Force, they are also open to individual interpretation.
SHOTS FOR A GOOD CAUSE!
Less than a year after enlisting in the Air Force, Jennifer’s grandfather, Beni, passed away. Although challenged with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Beni always laughed and joked as if the debilitating effects of MS did not exist. Not a day goes by where Jennifer isn’t thinking of Beni and his spirit of strength and humor. She continues to remember him through her photography. Every shot taken is an opportunity to help others challenged with MS. In memory of Benigno Q. Diaz, the artist’s profits are donated to the National MS Society, North Florida Chapter.

“IN THE LIGHT OF REVERENCE” - March 18th

HPCC Hosts PBS P.O.V. Film
“IN THE LIGHT OF REVERENCE”
The City of Fort Walton Beach Heritage Park and Cultural Center will host a screening of the P.B.S. documentary film “In the Light of Reverence” by filmmakers Christopher Mcleod and Malinda Maynor. This event will be held on Friday, March 18th at 6:30 PM inside the Indian Temple Mound Museum Lazarus Education Center during Downtown Art Walk in Fort Walton Beach.  It is free and open to the public. This event is in collaboration with P.O.V., a PBS’ award-winning nonfiction film series.  The screening is part of a free program of film screenings and artist discussions titled P.O.V. Film Screening and Event Series hosted by Heritage Park and Full Circle Art Gallery.
Film Synopsis: Devils Tower. The Four Corners. Mount Shasta. All places of extraordinary beauty — and impassioned controversy — as Indians and non-Indians struggle to co-exist with very different ideas about how the land should be used. For Native Americans, the land is sacred and akin to the world's greatest cathedrals. For others, the land should be used for industry and recreation. Narrated by Peter Coyote and Tantoo Cardinal (Metis), In the Light of Reverence is a beautifully rendered account of the struggles of the Lakota in the Black Hills, the Hopi in Arizona and the Wintu in California to protect their sacred sites. An Independent Television Service (ITVS) & Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT) Co-presentation and a Television Race Initiative (TRI) Selection.
POV (a cinema term for "point of view") is television's longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction films. POV premieres 14-16 of the best, boldest and most innovative programs every year on PBS. Since 1988, POV has presented over 275 films to public television audiences across the country. POV films are known for their intimacy, their unforgettable storytelling and their timeliness, putting a human face on contemporary social issues.
Heritage Park & Cultural Center is located at 139 Miracle Strip Parkway SE.  Museum operating hours for the fall are 12:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and closed on Sunday. For further information please call 850-833-9595.
